Cupping

Cupping is a form of therapy where cups are applied to the skin and pressure changes in the cup (caused by heat or suction) cause the skin and superficial muscle tissue to be drawn into the cup. At The Subtle Point, we perform fire cupping where a flame is utilized to draw the oxygen out of the cups prior to being placed on the skin. The lack of oxygen creates a vacuum and when they are quickly placed on the skin, the cup sucks up the skin and underlying muscles.

The suction of these cups improves circulation and the movement of lymph in the areas where the cups are applied and move to. Most of our patients report that the sensation of cupping feels like a deep tissue massage. The difference is that this form of therapy is like a reverse massage, with the tissues being pulled upwards versus a massage which manipulates tissue with a downward force.

We utilize a few different techniques at our clinic to provide the highest quality results for a wide variety of ailments. Stagnant cupping is where we place cups on certain areas for 5-8 minutes to create a myofascial release, relax the muscles, and improve blood flow to that localized area. Flash cupping is a technique often utilized for patients that are more sensitive, and the placed over certain points for less than a minute. Moving cupping is utilized to treat a large area, most commonly used on parts of the body with a large surface area, and is used to massage the tissue and improve blood and lymph circulation.

These techniques are effective in treating muscle tension, spasm, and pain, especially on the back where it is easiest to cup.  All of the techniques can often leave the skin slightly red and looking bruised for a short amount of time. These “bruises” almost always do not hurt because there is no underlying tissue damage like in a typical bruise.

Frequently Questions & Answers About Our Treatments

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture uses needles that are significantly smaller than any syringe that a doctor would normally use. The sensation has been said to be comparable to a bug bite or a pinch, but often most people do not feel anything at all.  Certain points are can be very tender to needle, and we almost always try not to use these points unless absolutely necessary. If you are sensitive to the needles we will adjust your treatment accordingly so that we can help you achieve your health goals in alignment with your comfort.

How long is each appointment?

At The Subtle Point, we offer a variety of services that can run from 5 minutes to as long as an hour. Initial appointments, however, are one hour long. During that appointment, we will go over your health intake form, go over the estimated amount of treatments that will get you to your optimal health, go over the treatment methods that will be utilized, herbal medicine, dietary and lifestyle advice, and more.

Can natural medicine REALLY help my psychological problems?

Absolutely. Your body is capable of healing almost any problem, especially when it has the specialized natural therapies we offer to help it get back on track. We do this by addressing the root cause of your problem as well as treating the symptoms that go along with it.

Do I need to disrobe for treatment?

For the most part, no you don't. I typically try and utilize points below the elbows and knees, sometimes around the belly, and sometimes on the back. Because of this I highly recommend that you come in wearing loose, comfortable clothing to allow easy access to these areas.

Will you tell me to stop taking my psych medications?

Absolutely NOT. First off, that is out of our scope of practice, and second, there are many potentially dangerous side effects that may arise when someone abruptly stops taking certain medications. We can work with you and your physician to slowly taper you off your current medications once you start seeing results from our 100% natural treatments.

How many treatments does it take?

The number of treatments that it takes to treat any given condition is based on a great number of factors. Some of these factors can include the length of having said condition, age, dietary and lifestyle factors, willingness to perform self-care at home, etc. It would also be safe to say that this medicine isn't magic and no condition will be fully resolved after one treatment. However, with that being said, many patients often leave the office with less pain than they started with and feeling more relaxed.

How long does it take to see results?

People often feel a positive shift after the very first treatment. Acupuncture is a very powerful way to stimulate endorphin release, which is the most powerful relaxing substance the body makes.

What are my chances of success?

Results do vary. Over 75% of our patients report improvement in their symptoms after just a few visits and many are able to reduce their medication use (if used, and under the supervision of the prescribing physician). However, every situation is unique and once we meet with you we will be able to give you our best estimate of time and prognosis of outcome.
