The Benefits of Acupuncture for Headache & Migraine Relief

For thousands of years, acupuncture has been used to treat a variety of ailments, including headaches and migraines. Our treatments can provide effective relief from common headaches and migraines while enhancing overall well-being by targeting specific acupuncture points. Acupuncture offers the following benefits for headache and migraine relief:

Reduces the Frequency of Attacks

Acupuncture has been shown to significantly decrease the number of headache and migraine episodes, helping patients experience fewer attacks over time. Clinical studies indicate that regular treatments can reduce the frequency for many individuals, making it an effective preventive option. This benefit allows for better daily functioning and reduced reliance on acute medications.

Provides Long-term Relief

Acupuncture offers sustained benefits for headache and migraine prevention, with effects lasting months, and sometimes years, after a course of treatments. Unlike some medications, it addresses underlying imbalances for enduring prophylaxis, potentially reducing the need for ongoing interventions. This long-lasting impact supports better long-term health and wellness.

Decreases Intensity & Duration

By targeting specific points, acupuncture can lower the severity of pain during headaches and migraines, often shortening the length of each episode. Patients report milder symptoms and quicker recovery, which contributes to overall comfort and less disruption in life. This makes it a valuable tool for managing acute flare-ups alongside other therapies.

Minimizes Side Effects and Stress

As a natural therapy, acupuncture has fewer adverse effects than conventional drugs, while also promoting relaxation to combat stress—a common migraine trigger. It fosters a calmer state, enhancing emotional well-being and potentially preventing stress-induced attacks. This holistic approach makes it a safe, complementary choice for many sufferers.

What to Expect During your First Acupuncture treatment for Headaches & Migraines

Health Assessment

During your initial visit at The Subtle Point, we will go over your chief concerns, medical history, lifestyle routines, and your health goals. Next, they'll conduct a detailed examination of your pulse and tongue, along with targeted questions to uncover any subtle imbalances in your body. Drawing from all this insight, they'll deliver a precise diagnosis and craft a personalized treatment plan designed just for you.

Acupuncture

During your acupuncture session, you'll get comfortable on a treatment table. The practitioner will gently insert thin, sterile needles into specific points on your body to help ease headaches and migraines. You might feel a quick pinch when the needles go in, but it's usually painless and even relaxing. Then, just lie back for 20 to 30 minutes while the treatment does its thing.

Aftercare and Follow-ups

After your acupuncture session for headaches and migraines, your practitioner will provide personalized aftercare advice, including suggestions for lifestyle adjustments, dietary tweaks, and easy at-home practices to help maintain and enhance the benefits. They'll discuss a recommended follow-up schedule tailored to your specific needs and condition, typically suggesting an average of around 10 regular treatments, though in rare or more chronic cases, it may extend to 15-20 sessions. Subsequent visits will be adjusted based on your treatment goals, how well you're responding, and your overall progress toward relief.

He has addressed my issues for sacroiliitis, weak wrists from constant computer use and migraines with needlework (dry and electrical stimulation); tense neck pain with scalp massage; lower back pain from prolonged sitting with cupping; and plantar fasciitis with gua sha and moxibustion sticks. At a recent appointment, ear beads were used to treat anxiety. I am appreciative of holistic alternatives to supplement the care I receive elsewhere. I leave each session feeling refreshed and relieved.

Michael was SO great. I have chronic migraines and suffer from tight sore muscles in my neck and back constantly. One session, and I can already feel the difference and my muscles relaxing. He went above and beyond to help me get to feeling better. I booked my next appointment right then and there!

“The owner Michael was super nice and very knowledgeable! I had a great experience!”

“This is the first time I’ve ever had acupuncture and cupping, and it was great. Definitely recommend.”

  • Mike's sincere dedication to his acupuncture craft is evident in the simple and clean ambiance found in his treatment rooms, responsive software for rebooking appointments as well as requesting invoices for HSA reimbursement, flexibility in updating arrival time through text, willingness to research multicultural probiotics and great interpersonal communication skills - I enjoy catching up with him or staying quiet to listen to chirping birds. One of the best acupuncture experiences I've ever had! I always feel rejuvenated and refreshed after seeing Mike for a 60 minute session with fire cupping at the end. Mike even took the time to notice that I had some serious tension in my neck and shoulders that was causing tension headaches. He took an extra 5 minutes at the end of my treatment to massage and relax my neck. I couldn't be more grateful with how good I feel! I would give him 10 stars if I could. Thank you so much!

Great experience! This is my third time seeing Mike and I will continue to keep coming. Mike goes over all the issues you’re having and makes a game plan on what treatments you need and what you can be doing at home. He seems to truly care about his clients and making them feel better. The office is very clean and relaxing.

Michael is amazing! I started going to the Subtle Point for intense headaches in my first trimester of pregnancy and they completely went away after 2 visits. I've continued to see Michael throughout my pregnancy to help manage various symptoms, all of which are gone after a visit. I'll definitely continue to see Michael for the remainder of my pregnancy and for postpartum care as well. Would 10/10 recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Acupuncture employs needles that are substantially smaller than those used by doctors for injections. The sensation has been compared to an insect bite or a pinch, however most people do not experience anything at all. Certain points can be painful to needle, and we aim to avoid them unless they are absolutely essential. If they are, we usually use thinner needles for those points. If you are sensitive to needles, we will modify your therapy so that you can reach your health goals while remaining comfortable.Description text goes here
